About our cause

Hello! We are Para Dance UK, a charity and the National Governing Body for Para Dance Sport and a leading provider for inclusive dance in the UK. We deliver inclusive dance workshops to all ages and abilities and believe that Everyone Can Dance and everyone should have the chance to experience the joys and benefits of movement to music. We have instructors across the UK including in West Sussex and Horsham.

West Sussex mental health services are underfunded and overstretched. We believe that our inclusive dance classes could really benefit the community and open up doors to people as a fun, recreational activity.

Dance and movement provides important mental support and a reduction in stress and anxiety. It provides purpose, social solidarity, connection and improves a person's coping resources. Importantly it can also prevent health intervention.

Dance for Seniors:

This is particularly important for older people, who have arguably been hit the hardest by Covid-19. Many who were already feeling isolated are now suffering from terrible loneliness and a complete lack of physical activity. About three-quarters of care home residents have dementia and the impact of coronavirus on them has been enormous. Many have faced a decline in both their mental and physical health. The confusion they have faced as a result of not being able to see family members, seeing people in PPE and grieving for the loss of friends is heartbreaking. The older generation have suffered in more ways than we can imagine. Those individuals who have suffered a stroke or fall have missed out on being referred for strength and balance classes and day centres have closed meaning older people have nowhere to visit for respite. Dementia sufferers, in particular, need the stimulation and there is also the strain that is now placed on partners who no longer get a break from looking after these individuals.

Local services have been doing a great job to support older people in the community. This support has included providing meals to some of the most vulnerable, shopping services and delivery of medication and other essentials to those who need it, including those who are shielding or who are unable to shop for themselves due to transport or mobility challenges, those with no family or friends to shop for them, those who are unable to access online shopping services or concerned they would otherwise struggle without this ongoing support.

However, there is a distinct lack of service provision for physical activity for older adults. The NHS advises If you want to stay pain-free, reduce your risk of mental illness, and be able to go out and stay independent well into old age, you're advised to keep moving'. The World Health Organization (WHO) also states that compared to less active men and women, older adults who are physically active have:

• lower rates of coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, colon and breast cancer, a higher level of cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness,

• healthier body mass and composition and enhanced bone health; and

• higher levels of functional health, a lower risk of falling, and better cognitive function

Dancing in particular allows those with Alzheimer's disease and dementia to move as a means to communicate, which helps them develop a ‘physical vocabulary’. We want to be there for EVERYONE and ensure that nobody, especially those who are vulnerable, frail or alone misses out on the chance to live a healthy life.

We need your support urgently to assist Adult Social Care in West Sussex. We have a duty to look after older adults in our community and they should not miss out on activities that build both confidence and physical mobility at this time.

Your support will help us in the following;

1. Inclusive Dance Classes: Delivery of pre-recorded low impact dance activity sessions covering a range of genres with a focus on gentle movement and mobility and positive mental health. These sessions will be delivered by our specialist Inclusive dance instructors and can be enjoyed at home or in a residential setting.

2. Learning Activities: Development of a remote Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Supporting Older Adults in Dance Activity and other training opportunities. The CPD will be aimed at carers and family members who will then be able to support an individual in participation.
